Be Careful With Your Words.....

The Power of Words

Words are probably the most powerful tools of all. They can hit you harder than a hammer and can wreck havoc in your peaceful life. Few wrong words and your marriage or relationship can suffer irreparable damage. But we often forget that words also have the power to heal any wound faster than anything else. Particularly the power words like please, sorry and thank you.

What does the Bible teach us about words? Words are not simply sounds caused by air passing through our larynx. Words have real power. God spoke the world into being by the power of His words (Hebrews 11:3), and we are in His image in part because of the power we have with words. Words do more than convey information. The power of our words can actually destroy one’s spirit, even stir up hatred and violence. They not only incite wounds but inflict them directly. Of all the creatures on this planet, only man has the ability to communicate through the spoken word. The power to use words is a very unique and powerful gift from God.

Though it is a gift, our words have the power to destroy and the power to build up (Proverbs 12:6). The writer of Proverb tells us: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21). Are we using words to build up people or destroy them? Are they filled with hate or love, bitterness or blessing, complaining or compliments, lust or love, victory or defeat? Like tools they can be used to help us reach our goals or to send us spiraling into a deep depression.

Furthermore, our words not only have the power to bring us death or life in this world, but in the next as well. Jesus said: “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37). Words are so important, that we are going to give an account of what we say when we stand before the Lord Jesus Christ.

So we see that words are not just a plain combination of alphabets, they are the carriers of meanings, of one’s thoughts and one’s state of mind. When words are read as thoughts or emotions, the real power of words can kill, destroy, heal, help, inspire, encourage, or motivate us.

How can you neglect the immense power of some hand written words on a piece of note? When you are upset nothing comes close to those words of affirmation that make you feel better instantly.

The power of a book lies in its words. No wonder some movie quotes become eternal aphorisms.

Every emotion like love, laughter, rage, anger, hatred, motivation, discouragement, oppression, depression and every other emotion that we human beings feel can be invoked by words. Beauty of life lies in utilizing this stupendous ability of words in making someone’s day, if not life.

Speak words that are motivating, uplifting and soothing. I remember spending a large part of my life in being a person who had never uttered anything rude to anyone. Though in the recent past there are incidents when I have hurt my dear ones, I now make a deliberate attempt of becoming the same sane person I was until a few years ago.

I truly understand what words can make of a person. I have experienced their utter importance both as an encouragement and a deterrent.

One should always make the best possible use of these pathos laden words to spread happiness, love and compassion around because a word once uttered can not be reverted back!

You say a nice thing to somebody and you can spoil it by saying something nasty the next minute but once you offend someone by your words, it will take a long time to heal the wound. It is easier to heal wounds given by someone else but it is extremely difficult to cover up the damages of your own giving.

Even in a marriage or any relationship, the gift of words of affirmation can not be underestimated. I know how it makes my day or rather days at a stretch when my hubby showers me with compliments early in the morning. Watch your words. We can change the world with our words. If you must speak, speak positive words. God bless you...
