Do you know that there’s a scalp disorder known as seborrheic dermatitis?
Oily scalp is a problematic scalp condition that can lead to greasy hair,
dandruff or a skin disorder known as seborrheic dermatitis. Excess oiliness,
also known as seborrhoea, is one of the most common scalp conditions. Treating
your oily scalp is usually possible using home remedies and certain
over-the-counter medicated products, although in extreme cases, you may require
prescription-strength medications.
Causes and Symptoms
So what exactly causes all that oil?
"The reason hair gets oily is because the sebaceous glands in your scalp
produce excess sebum, which travels down the hair shaft. In other words, oily
scalp often results from an excess production of your skin's natural oils, or
sebum. This can cause your hair and
scalp to feel greasy or dirty, even if you've recently washed your hair. Oily
scalp can cause scalp acne or dandruff. Treatments generally focus on reducing
the amount of sebum your scalp produces while cleansing and removing dead skin
cells and other build up from your scalp.
Causes of excess sebum (the natural oil produced by
your scalp) can include genes, hormonal imbalances, humidity, your
diet, which also causes scaly patches and will need to be managed with the help
of your dermatologist. (And keep in mind that you may also need to visit your
dermatologist if the problem persists after you've tried all at-home
solutions.)
To treat oiliness at home, we suggest shampooing
less. That may sound counter intuitive, but it does work. That's because
shampoo strips your hair of oil, and the more you use it, the more sebum your
scalp produces in response.
Does an oily scalp cause hair loss, if
so how do you get rid of it?
Oily scalp may or may not cause
hair loss. If your scalp produces so much oil that it blocks follicles from
producing hair growth, then you would want to ensure you have a clean scalp.
Oily scalp can also be the beginning of dandruff. There are many types of dandruff, but the one I am referring to is waxy, yellow flakes, which develops into sphere shapes usually located on the top of the hair. Once the dandruff gets to this point, it will require medical treatment.
If your scalp is oily but your hair is dry, you should consider a Balancing Shampoo. This shampoo will balance out the dryness of the hair, as well as, the oiliness of your scalp.
If your scalp is oily, yet, your hair is oily too, I would suggest a shampoo with Tea Tree. The tea tree oil, eucalyptus, and menthol will invigorate the scalp and cleanse you without over drying the hair and scalp.
