What is counselling?
Counselling provides a forum where an individual can communicate with a counsellor to seek solutions to a specific problem, to learn new coping skills, to seek an answer about a life dilemma, to function more maturely or to clarify what is ailing them. Although talking to friends and family is useful, counsellors are not involved in your life in any other way and can listen to you from a neutral perspective without having any stake in the issues you raise or the decisions you make.
Do I need counselling?
• You are experiencing mood changes, such as depression or anxiety, and have no idea either why or what to do about it
• You have distressing symptoms which are interfering with and diminishing your quality of life
• You feel a sense of helplessness
• Your relationships are suffering – whether it be with your partner, family or friends
• You have no one close in whom you can confide
• Your coping mechanisms have been stretched and are no longer helping you
• You are facing new difficulties that you have not dealt with before
• You want to develop further personal skills, such as time management or stress management
• You are having thoughts of harming yourself
• You have tried to cope with your problems on your own but still find it hard to deal with
Counselling can help you develop the necessary coping skills and can provide you with a set of new strategies you can apply to make your problem manageable. When people are feeling low, the natural tendency is to do nothing and wait for things improve on their own. However, often things can get worse if you don't do anything about them and it is important to actively seek help. There are clear signs telling you when you need help from a health professional.
